You can give people suggestions as to the type of character they are e.g. come as a surgeon, dress as a hippie. This way they are dressed generically and can suit a wide range of characters. It is best to let your host put people into groups and assign characters on the night.

If you’re planning a surprise birthday party, it’s best to bring in the murder mystery host after the surprise has taken place. Once the surprise happens, there is usually 30–45 minutes of meet and greet while the guest of the moment greets everyone. This makes it difficult to start the game straight away. For example, if the surprise is at 7:00pm, have your host arrive around 7:30pm so they can set up and begin once things settle.
